Here are some handy tips and information about your Premium Banking debit and credit card.

  • First steps

    • To activate your card, your first transaction must be a standard point-of-sale or ATM transaction using your PIN.
    • To retrieve your PIN
    • PIN included: Peel back the sticker to reveal your unique PIN and memorise it.
    • To retrieve/change your PIN, dial 0860 109 085 and follow the voice prompts.
    • You can also retrieve your card PIN and perform other card management functions, such as setting transaction limits, by:
      • Visiting your nearest branch with your ID.
      • Logging into your Absa Banking App, select Cards from the bottom menu and then select the relevant card.
      • Logging into Absa Online, select Settings > My Card Management > PIN Retrieval and then the specific card from the dropdown menu.
    • For a reissued card, use your previous card’s PIN.
    • For added security, activate your NotifyMe SMSs to receive transaction notifications. Value Bundle customers who use the Absa App and have enabled notifications in app, will receive their transaction notifications via App
  • Card safety tips

    • Memorise your PIN and store your card safely.
    • Never keep your PIN and card together.
    • Never share your PIN with anyone.
    • Always watch your card at tillpoints.
    • Make sure that you get your card back after every purchase.
    • Never trust strangers or ask them for help at an ATM.
    • Treat your contactless card as cash – always keep it secure.
    • Temporarily lock, stop or replace your card anytime using your Absa Banking App.

    Note

    • Never write down your PIN or disclose it to anyone. If you have a debit and a credit card, don’t choose the same PIN for both of them. This will safeguard your other card if one is lost.
    • If you suspect that your Absa card was retained by an ATM, contact us immediately and block your card before you leave the ATM.
    • Always cover the PIN pad or terminal each time that you type in your PIN.
    • In the world of online shopping, the OTP is your best friend. The OTP is provided to you to authorise a transaction. Never share it. If you receive an OTP even though you are not shopping online, report this to the Absa Fraud Hotline.
    • Absa will never ask you for an OTP security code to stop fraudulent transactions. Immediately hang up the call and contact the Absa Fraud Hotline on 0860 557 557, or report it via our Banking App by going to Menu and then selecting Report fraud.
    • Keep track of your account balances and transactions via the Absa Banking App or Absa Online, so that you can identify any suspicious activity on your account.

     

    To report a lost or stolen card, call the 24/7 Absa Stop Card Centre on 0800 11 11 55.

    You can also stop and replace your card on the Absa Banking App.

  • Features of your credit card

    • Credit cards can be used to pay for everyday purchases and cover unexpected expenses while building up your credit history.
    • International acceptance – a great companion when travelling.
    • As soon as your card is issued, whether it is your new card, renewal (reissue) card or an upgrade, track the status of your card using the Track Delivery feature in the Absa mobile App.
    • Absa Credit Coach in App – helps you monitor and improve your credit profile. Credit Coach is located under “Offers” tab.
    • Build your credit history to help you secure future loans.
    • Up to 57 days’ interest-free on meeting qualifying criteria.
    • Pay no transaction fees on card swipes.
    • Safe and secure online shopping with Verified by Visa when you shop at participating 3D-Secure online merchants with SMS or in-App verification.
    • Lost card protection, which means that if your card is lost or stolen, you will not be held liable for any fraudulent transactions that may occur on the card after you have reported the loss or theft. You are covered from the moment that you report the loss or theft. You can report this by calling us 24 hours a day, toll-free on 0800 11 1155 or on the Banking App. Once you have reported a missing card, it is stopped immediately and you will be sent a new card. Please note that the free lost card protection does not cover the cost of replacing your card and a lost card administration fee will be charged to your account.
    • Automatic basic travel insurance is included when you purchase your international return tickets with your card.*
    • Visa benefits.
    • Alleviate your family’s financial burden if you become temporarily or permanently disabled, are diagnosed with a critical illness, experience loss of income or even in the event of your death, by adding a Credit Protection Plan to your card account.
    • Your credit limit can be adjusted online, via the call centre or at any Absa branch.
    • Full ATM functions, including cash withdrawals from any ATM worldwide.
    • PIN and limit management and viewing of card details: If you forget your PIN just as you’re about to pay or want to shop online and do not have your card on hand, don’t panic. Just view your PIN or card details on the Banking App or call 0860 109 085 and follow the voice prompts to retrieve your PIN.
    • Secondary credit cards: You can share the convenience, flexibility and peace of mind of a credit card with someone special in your life – a spouse, partner or dependant – at a nominal fee (please refer to the latest pricing guide). The secondary cardholder will be identified and verified, with the creation of a mini-CIF profile if they are not an existing Absa customer.

  • Credit card financial tips

    • Up to 57 days interest-free on qualifying credit card purchases, subject to full payment of the outstanding balance by the payment due date as stated on the monthly statement. Interest is charged from the transaction date on cash withdrawals, casino transactions, fund transfers, budget plan purchases, ATM account payments, Garage Card transactions, beneficiary payments, CashSends, prepaid products and Lotto. Terms and conditions apply.
    • Setting up a mandatory debit order will ensure that you never miss a payment.
      • The debit order may be authenticated via DebiCheck and the minimum amount due or full statement balance amount due will be collected.
    • NotifyMe: For added security, activate SMS notifications to get alerts of any activity on your account.
    • Budget facility: Your credit card gives you access to a budget facility to buy bigger items of over R300 in affordable equal monthly instalments over 3 (three) to 60 (sixty) months. To have your item moved back to your normal facility, call the number on your card.
    • Minimum repayment.

    To ensure that customers don’t amortise negatively*, the minimum repayment for all customers is a maximum of either:

    • 3% of balance calculation + initiation fee (where applicable) + budget instalments + arrear amounts + over-limit amounts.
    • R25.00 (in the event that the account’s minimum payment is less than R25.00, but the outstanding balance is more than R25.00).

    In the event that the minimum payment is less than R25.00, but the outstanding balance on the account is also less than R25.00, the outstanding balance becomes the minimum payment.


    *Negative amortisation occurs 
    when the principal amount on a loan increases gradually because the loan repayments do not cover the total amount of interest costs for the period. 

     

     

Your Absa debit card is contactless-enabled and can be used to tap to pay for all transactions where the contactless/payWave symbol is displayed.

For transactions over R500, or merchant-dependent limits, you will be asked to enter your PIN.

Contactless transactions on your debit card are debited against your transactional account and transactions on your credit card are debited to your credit card account. These transactions will appear on your statement with all your other transactions.

Please safeguard your contactless-enabled card to avoid fraudulent use. We will never ask you to share your PIN to maintain your card or transaction limits via telephone, SMS or email.

If your contactless card is lost or stolen, you can request a replacement. A replacement fee may be charged. Call Absa immediately on 0800 11 11 55 if your card is lost or stolen or your PIN is compromised.
