  • Rewards Scores and Tiers

The programme is designed to Reward our members on their products and their banking behaviour with Absa.

We allocate a Rewards score to each qualifying product and banking behaviour that allows us to determine what tier you are on. The higher your Rewards score, the higher your Rewards tier, the more Cash Rewards you earn.

There are nine product categories that will contribute towards your rewards tier:

    Banking Products
    Category Product Category Monthly Score

Members are registered immediately after the registration form is completed and submitted. The member will get a confirmation SMS with the membership number.

If you are new to Absa (no existing Absa products) and open an Absa Transactional account such as cheque, debit or credit card, your Absa Rewards registration will be in a pre-registration status until the Transactional account is activated (i.e. activation of a new account occurs when the minimum deposit amount required to open the account is paid). For illustrative purposes:

    • If your debit order was unsuccessful for Month 1, we will try again to debit your account in Month 2. If your debit order was successful in Month 2, there will be two debit orders (Month 1 and Month 2) that will go off your account which will result in you earning your cash back for Month 1 and Month 2.

Scores and Tiers

  • What is the Rewards Score?

Your Rewards score is a score that is allocated to each product and behaviour on the programme that allow us to determine the tier you are on. The higher your Rewards score, the higher your Rewards tier, the more Cash Rewards you earn.

  • What are the different product and banking behavior Rewards scores?

If you are over the age of 18 years of age with an Absa Transactional Account holding a cheque, debit and/or credit card, you are able to join the programme.

  • How are my Rewards scores calculated?

The programme is designed to Rewards our members on their product holding portfolio and their behaviour with Absa. To ensure that we give value to our customers, we assign a score to every qualifying product and behaviour.

  • How are my Rewards scores used to indicate the Rewards Tier that I am on?

Every qualifying product and banking behaviour has a score allocated to it. On the last day of every calendar month, all your qualifying products and banking behaviours you have adopted will determine your Rewards tier. Your Rewards tier is re-calculated at the end of every month to ensure that you earn according to your product holding and how you bank at that time.

  • Are all product scores assigned on a monthly basis?

Not all scores are assigned on a monthly basis. To ensure that we reward our customers correctly, there are some scores that are allocated to a customer based on their behaviour over two consecutive months. These include your active banking score and your recurring monthly deposit score.

  • How is scoring calculated on joint accounts?

If you have a shared or club account, the account will only contribute to your Rewards “Tier” calculation if all the participants are registered for our Rewards Programme. Only principal cardholders can redeem Cash Rewards.

If you are the primary or secondary accountholder of a joint account that meets the scoring rules, you will receive the score available for the product. If you are the primary accountholder of a joint Transactional Account, only you will earn Cash Rewards for all the Qualifying Transactions made with the joint account. Only you, the primary account holder, will be able to redeem the Cash Rewards.

  • What is the accrual cycle?

The accrual cycle (also known as the accrual period) is the period of your spend during which you accrue (i.e. accumulate) Cash Rewards. The accrual cycle is the period of transactions which are used to calculate your Cash Rewards that are paid out at the end of the month. This cycle begins on the 16th of every month and ends on the 15th of the following month (both dates inclusive).

  • It seems as if it takes 2 months for the product score to be awarded to a customer. Is this true?

The scores are calculated at the end of every month (i.e. 28, 30, 31 of the month), so if the product is active at the date of the tier calculation, your tier and earn rates could be impacted. Remember, the score ranges determine your tier and hence you could take a new product but not move up the tier and hence your earn rates will remain unchanged.

Remember, the active banking score (270) and recurring monthly deposit payment score (20) will reflect in Month 3, in ensuring that the rule is adhered over two consecutive months (as per the score rule).

Cash Rewards from Absa

  • How are my Cash Rewards from Absa calculated?

The scores are calculated at the end of every month (i.e. 28, 30, 31 of the month), so if the product is active at the date of the tier calculation, your tier and earn rates could be impacted. Remember, the score ranges determine your tier and hence you could take a new product but not move up the tier and hence your earn rates will remain unchanged.

Remember, the active banking score (270) and recurring monthly deposit payment score (20) will reflect in Month 3, in ensuring that the rule is adhered over two consecutive months (as per the score rule).

  • What is the maximum amount of spend that I can earn Cash Rewards from Absa?

This is dependent on your segment (i.e. differentiated by the product you hold).

  • How do the spend caps or spend limits work?

You will earn Cash Rewards from Absa on qualifying transactions, up to the first R75000 worth of purchases made during an accrual period and based on your segment profile (as stipulated above). The accrual period or accrual cycle is the period of your spend during which you accrue Cash Rewards. This cycle begins on the 16th of every month and ends on the 15th of the following month (both dates inclusive).

  • What are the different earn rates on Cash Rewards from Absa?

You can only earn cash back on the up to first qualifying R75 000 you spend on your Absa Card during the accrual period and you earn more on your Credit Card.

  • Will the funds in my Multi-Currency Cash Passport be converted into rand value to calculate my Cash Rewards

Yes, the allocation will be on the rand value loaded on your Multi Currency Cash Passport. The earn rate is calculated at the currency selling rate used at the time of processing the transaction, i.e. the Cash Passport Load date.

    For illustrative purposes:

If you had USD10 and the exchange rate is R14 = $1 (at the time of processing the transaction), you will earn Cash Rewards on R140 (as per your Rewards tier).

  • What do you mean by qualifying transactions?

You will not earn any Cash Rewards from Absa for the following transactions, regardless of the transaction method:

    • Electronic funds transfers (EFT)
    • Travellers cheques
    • Foreign exchange
    • Cash withdrawals
    • Gambling at a registered or unregistered casino (local, international or online) and participation in lotteries organised abroad*
    • Toll fees

Debit Orders

  • Why does Absa require customers to add a debit order to their account, if they can manage their credit?

Setting up a debit order for mandatory monthly payments, ultimately provides you with the added reassurance that your account:

    • Will not go into arrears;
    • Generate unnecessary penalty charges; or
    • Negatively impact your credit scoring profile
  • What is the difference between a debit order and a stop order?

A stop order is an instruction that you issue to your bank to make a series of future dated recurring payments, whereas a debit order is an instruction that you provide to a third party (Source: pasa.org.za).

  • Will I still earn the product score if no debit order is collected?

Yes you will. The requirement is that a debit order is instructed to be set up and irrespective of whether the debit order transaction takes place, you will still get awarded the score. It is however important to note that if you do not make payment and on acting on the debit order, you have insufficient funds; your account will go into a default status, hence resulting in you not earning Cash Rewards for that month. In addition, on certain products such as vehicle finance, if you set up a quarterly debit order, you will still get the product score on a monthly basis.

  • I have a credit card but I am not getting the score because of the debit order. Why do I need to load a debit order?

This change was made with the intention of providing our valued customers, with a greater level of convenience. Setting up a debit order for mandatory monthly payments, ultimately provides you with the added reassurance that your account:

    • Will not go into arrears;
    • Generate unnecessary penalty charges; or
    • Negatively impact your credit scoring profile

It is important to take note that this does not in any way prevent you from making payments directly into your Credit Card at any given time. If you load an Installment Only (Minimum Balance Due) debit order on your credit card and pay your Credit Card with equal to or more than your minimum balance due, no debit order will be processed and you will still get the score.

  • Which product scores require a debit order to be in place?

You need to set up a debit order for your credit card, home loan, vehicle and asset finance and personal loan. If you do not set up a debit order, you will not get the Rewards score for these products.

Lending Products

Savings & Investments and Recurring Deposits

  • What is the Rewards score for Savings & Investments?

    50.

  • How can I earn the Rewards score for Savings and Investments?

All you have to do is have a qualifying Savings & Investment account such as a Unit Trust, Tax-Free Savings Investment or Currency Investment Account with a minimum combined investment balance of R5000.

The following Savings & Investment products are excluded from the score allocation:

    • Income and Growth Performa
    • Club Account
    • Travel Club
    • Investment Club
    • Grocery Club
    • Liquidity Plus

In addition to the above, the Money Market Fund is excluded from Unit Trusts and hence does not contribute to your product score

  • Will I get the Rewards score if I have R4999?

No. It needs to be a minimum combined investment balance of R5000.

  • Which Savings & Investments products are not included in the Rewards score inclusion?

The following Savings & Investment products are excluded from the Score allocation:

    • Income and Growth Performa
    • Club Account
    • Travel Club
    • Investment Club
    • Grocery Club
    • Liquidity Plus

In addition to the above, the Money Market Fund is excluded from Unit Trusts and hence does not contribute to your product score.

  • What is the Rewards score for recurring monthly deposit payments?

    20.

  • How can I earn the Rewards score for Recurring Monthly Payments?

Recurring monthly deposits of R250 or more into a Savings or Investment account needs to be made for two consecutive months to qualify for the score. Important to know is that the R250 deposit can be split into smaller amounts made over the month and can be split over a number of Savings & Investment accounts.

  • I have been making recurring monthly deposit payments into my Savings account, but I am not receiving the score?

The score on the recurring monthly deposit is on a minimum R250 over two (2) consecutive months. For illustrative purposes: if you made a recurring deposit of R250 in September and October, you will then get the score at the end of November and if you move up a tier because of this, the corresponding earn rate will reflect in the November Cash Rewards payout. If you made a deposit of R250 in September but not in October, you will not get the score at the end of November, as you need to make this recurring payment over two (2) consecutive months in order to get the score.

  • Can I make recurring deposit payments into a fixed deposit account?

You will need to have a product that allows for deposits to be made. A fixed deposit account does not allow for deposit payments. You can take out an Absa TruSave, Tax Free Savings Account or a Notice Deposit which allows for monthly deposit payments, thereby allowing you to earn the recurring deposit score.

The recurring deposit score is 20, however, if you have a minimum balance of R5000 in your combined Savings and Investment portfolio, you will also receive the Savings and Investment score of 50. If you do not have the minimum balance of R5000, then you will only receive the recurring monthly deposit score, on the basis that it happens over two consecutive months.

  • How do I enable eStatements?

Customers can enable their eStatements by:

    • Calling the relevant Product House/s to enable it;
    • Visiting a branch; or
    • Updating it on their Internet Banking “Profile” by selecting “Manage eStatements”
  • What products have eStatements?

eStatements have to be enabled for all of the qualifying products on the program for the customer to get the score. The following products have eStatements available:

    • Transactional
    • Credit Card
    • Home Loan
    • Vehicle Finance
    • Personal Loan
    • Savings & Investments
  • Do I need to enable eStatements on all qualifying products?

    Yes.

  • I have enabled my eStatements but am still not receiving the Rewards score?

    This could be due to:

    • eStatements on one of your qualifying products not being set up; which can be easily checked and updated on Online Banking; or
    • The timing of the eStatement being set up. For instance, if you have set up your eStatement in October, your Rewards score will only be effected in November scoring cycle, which will be accounted for in the December payout period
  • How do I update my contact details and marketing consent?

A customer can update their contact details by:

    • Calling the Contact Centre where Absa Agents need to update the customers information on the Banking system or
    • Updating it on Online Banking “Profile” by selecting “Manage your Details”

Remember, post is not a contact or marketing consent channel that is awarded the Rewards score. Only email, SMS and Telephone

  • How do I get the beneficiary payments score?

You only need to make five or more beneficiary payments using Absa Online Banking, the Absa Banking App, an ATM or USSD every month in order to get the Rewards score of 40. This score is allocated for once off beneficiary payments or recurring beneficiary payments.

  • Will I get the beneficiary payment score if I make a payment through a 3rd party payment channel?

We are not able to validate the beneficiary payment via a 3rd party payment channel and hence we cannot award you the score for beneficiary payments made outside of the Absa channels.

  • How do I set up a beneficiary payment?

Beneficiary payments can be set up on Absa Online, the Absa Banking App or via the branch. You will need the beneficiary’s account details if it is an individual account or you can select the beneficiary from the Absa listed beneficiaries (where available).

  • What is the Rewards score allocated for using the banking products?

Customers open an Absa cheque account or take out an Absa debit and/or credit card, but do not use it. We want to give value to our customers by rewarding our customers for active usage of their Absa transactional products. We will therefore only allocate the Rewards score of 270 to you, every month, if you have:

    • Deposited your salary into your Absa Transactional Account and made 10 or more transactions; or
    • Have made payments to the value of R32000 or more into your Absa Transactional Account and made 10 or more transactions

This criteria needs to be met for two consecutive months in order to qualify for this score.

  • What does it mean to make 10 or more transactions?

This simply means that you need to make 10 or more of the following types of transactions:

    • Debit order payments
    • Once-off payments
    • Future-dated payments
    • Group payments
    • Immediate Interbank Payments (IIP)
    • Inter-account transfers
    • CashSend
    • Recurring payments

    • Purchases at in-store point of sales or on online payment channels
    • Beneficiary payments
    • Prepaid airtime purchases
    • Prepaid electricity purchases
    • Sending money overseas with Western Union

Transactions that are not initiated (made) by you are not taken into account in calculating the number of transactions for scoring purposes. Examples of transactions that are not customer initiated are bank fee charges.
