What you need to know

  • Uninterrupted power supply (UPS)

    • A UPS stores electricity from the grid to use during power outages.
    • Use plug-and-play solar, which comes with a battery that allows you to simply plug in your device and use it.
    • A UPS does not save you a lot of money on electricity but it will keep the power on during outages.

  •  Grid-tied system

    • This is the most common solar option and includes solar panels and an inverter.
    • The solar panels convert sunlight to electricity (DC) and the inverter transforms DC electricity into household-friendly power (AC).
    • The system runs off sunlight during daylight hours and off the inverter during nighttime. However, if your inverter doesn’t have a battery, the stored energy will be lost.
    • Without a battery, this option doesn’t keep the lights on during load shedding at night or if the weather during the day is overcast.
  • Hybrid system

    • Combines solar panels and inverter battery storage.
    • The extra energy is stored and used during power outages and at night when the solar panels don’t generate power.
    • This is a more reliable and efficient option for uninterrupted electricity and keeping the lights on during load shedding.
  • Going off-grid

    • Means running your home completely off the municipal grid and without their utility connections.
    • Relies only on electricity generated from solar panels.
    • The battery capacity and solar panel size may limit the ability to power up high-voltage appliances, so you’ll need to add other appliances such a solar geyser, gas stove and gas heaters for effectiveness.
