Absa and the Shoprite Group have announced a new partnership offering customers greater value on their everyday purchases through the Absa Rewards programme. The partnership forms part of Absa’s continued focus on creating tangible impact for customers through lifestyle-aligned rewards, helping them stretch their rands while banking smartly.

Absa Rewards members can now earn real cash back when shopping at Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, LiquorShop or online through Sixty60. Eligible spend made with qualifying Absa debit or credit cards earns up to 60% back during the two-month launch promotion (16 August to 15 October 2025), and then up to 30% back thereafter, depending on the customer’s Rewards Tier. The cashback is automatic, paid monthly, and can be used, saved, or reinvested according to the customer’s needs.

“Partnering with the Shoprite Group allows us to bring rewards even closer to how people actually live, putting money back in their pockets when they buy groceries, essentials, and everyday items,” said Alicia Raynard, Executive: Absa Rewards. “It’s part of our broader ambition to turn transactional banking into a platform for real value.”

Shoprite and Checkers are among the most accessible supermarkets in South Africa with a combined footprint of 1 800 locations nationwide and a strong presence in the daily lives of millions of consumers. This reach makes them ideal partners in Absa’s mission to deliver meaningful value to its customers, especially as purchases at Shoprite and Checkers represent the highest category of spend among Absa customers, which means this partnership is rewarding purchases where customers already shop most.

The partnership further reinforces Absa Rewards’ role as a powerful tool for deepening everyday banking relationships. The programme encourages continuous engagement by rewarding everyday spending habits, and in doing so, elevates Absa’s positioning as a bank that meets customers where they are.

Since inception, Absa Rewards has paid over R6.6 billion to a significant number of members, with one becoming a rewards millionaire. Customers are using their rewards to cover school supplies, lunchbox snacks, fuel and airtime – while others are saving for bigger life goals or helping family members during tough months.

The partnership with the Shoprite Group also builds on Absa’s growing momentum in reward-linked engagement. Spending data also shows that delivery services – led by Checkers Sixty60 – are among the fastest-growing categories for Rewards users, with smaller basket sizes pointing to frequent, high-convenience usage.

Customers can register for Absa Rewards via the Absa Banking App and begin earning immediately. All purchases made at Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hypers, LiquorShop and Sixty60, using eligible Absa cards, count towards the monthly spend cap for cashback.
