    What is SIM swap fraud protection?

    Due to an increase in SIM swap fraud across South Africa we have enhanced our online and mobile security to help protect you against this kind of fraud.

    As a result, from now on you will verify your transactions using your Absa Banking App. Previously verifications were sent to your SIM card (SureCheck). This will help to protect you from SIM swap fraud because unlike your card, the App cannot be cloned or swapped.

    Fraudsters use a false copy of your ID to get a SIM swap through your cellphone service provider without your knowledge. This gives them full access to your verification messages so you won't know when transactions are being made on your accounts.

  • How will I be protected

    How will I be protected?

    Using the App for verifications is much safer because:

    • Even if your SIM card is swapped you will still receive all your verification messages.
    • If you lose your device you can delink it immediately: log into your Absa Online Full Service account, select ‘Profile’ then select ‘Manage Devices’ and click the ‘delink device’ icon.
    • The passcode you use on your device is locked to that device meaning it cannot be cloned and used on another device.

    To take advantage of our upgraded security just follow these simple steps:

    1. Download (or upgrade to) the latest version of the Absa Banking App on your device.
    2. Login to the app using your Absa Banking details and follow the prompts to set up your device.
    3. Launch the app and enable notifications (accept permissions).
    4. That’s it!

    Don’t worry: you can carry on doing your banking as normal on Absa Online and use the App only to verify your transactions.

    What if I don’t have a smartphone or cannot load the app?

    You will continue banking as normal but without enhanced SIM swap fraud protection. We strongly recommend you upgrade to a device that can load the app in order to take advantage of the extra protection this upgrade offers.

  • What if I have more than one cell phone or tablet

    What if I have more than one cell phone or tablet?

    If you have multiple devices, only one will be used as a verification device - don’t worry though, you will be asked which device you wish to use when you first load the app.

  • IMPORTANT

    IMPORTANT:

    We will NEVER ask you for your login details or PIN during your SIM swap fraud protection transition. If anyone does contact you to get these details, it is a SCAM so please report it immediately.
