Bankers in the Gauteng region of Absa Bank Ltd (Absa), a member of Barclays Africa Group Ltd, today launched an annual programme aimed at providing mentorship and real-life workplace exposure to learners from further education and training (FET) colleges in the province.

The launch of the Workplace Experiential Learning Programme will see 40 learners with the National Certificate Vocational Level Four qualification from FET colleges in Gauteng spending time with various Absa bankers, during which they will gain real-life experience and skills aligned with their career aspirations.

The inaugural programme will run from 21-27 July 2015 at Absa’s offices in Sandton. Over the course of this period, these learners will spend time with various Absa employees, including Relationship Executives, Transactional Bankers, Credit Analysts as well as Business Bankers.

Oscar Siziba, Provincial Head of Absa Business Banking in Gauteng, says the bank hopes students’ experience will inspire them to pursue careers in the banking industry.

“We are delighted to be launching this experiential learning programme, which we believe will go a long way in empowering these learners and giving them a feel of what it is like to work in the banking environment. We hope that at the end of it they will be inspired enough to consider careers as bankers.”

“Most importantly, we hope that they will be better equipped for the real world of work upon completion of their studies. We are also proud that Absa colleagues in Gauteng who have committed to serve as mentors to these learners,” he says.

The programme is scheduled to run for a week once every year.
