Absa’s Business Banking division in Gauteng is set to present over R40 000 worth of nappies and baby wipes to selected orphanages in Gauteng.
In total, more than 37,000 nappies and over 15 000 baby wipes will be donated.
The majority of the nappies and baby wipes have already been handed over to the Orlando Children’s Home, an orphanage based in Soweto, Johannesburg, which is currently home to 60 children and youths who have been removed from parental custody for reasons such as abuse, neglect, rape and abandonment.
“Since the home looks after many young babies, it spends a considerable amount of resources on nappies. We have chosen to step in and assist with this dire need,” says Oscar Siziba, Provincial Head of Absa Business Banking in Gauteng.
According to Siziba, the ongoing project at Orlando has inspired other similar projects to be launched all over Gauteng, which will also donate nappies to these orphanages.
Siziba says that the Absa team had set themselves an ambitious fundraising target of 8000 nappies when the collection drive began at Absa last month. By collecting over 37 000 nappies, the bank overshot its target by 455% in just four weeks.
“Absa is always looking for ways to leave the communities in which we operate better than we found them. In this spirit of stewardship, we launched the Gauteng Absa Business Banking Nappy Drive and are pleased to have made a real impact and improvement that will help our communities to Prosper,” concludes Siziba.
