The bursary application process

 

Apply online from 16 August to 31 October 2010.

 

All applicants will be informed of the outcome of the application by 31 January 2011

 

Who qualifies for the bursary programme?

Bursaries will be made available to students studying degrees that will provide essential or identified skills within the Financial Services Industry. Any one is eligible to apply for a bursary,  provided that you are able to show that:

  • you have not received any other bursary for the same period for which you are applying for sponsorship from Absa
  • you are pursuing a course of study in a discipline that will benefit the Financial Services Industry
  • you are academically proficient
  • you have registered at a recognised Tertiary Education Institution in South Africa
  • you are a South African or Namibian citizen

The bursary programme selection criteria

Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:

Please note: bursary applicants will not be considered for a bursary if they fail any subjects in the current academic year or if they achieve an aggregate below a minimum of 65% for all their subjects in the current academic year.

 

After the completion of your studies

 

As a bursary student you will be required to enter the employment of Absa after the completion of your studies.  You will be contractually obliged to remain in the employment of Absa on a year- for- year basis for the duration of the bursary received. After the completion of your studies, you may be channelled to the Absa Graduate Development Programme, or any other suitable vacancies which may be available at the time. This is at the sole discretion of Absa.
 

Should you not be willing to join Absa at the company’s request, you will be liable to repay the full bursary amount and the interest accumulated. Should Absa not offer employment to you, repayment of the bursary awarded will not be expected. The decision to offer employment to you is at the sole discretion of Absa.

 

 

Who qualifies for the Bursary Programme?

Bursaries will be made available to full-time students who are studying toward qualifications which will provide essential or identified skills within the Financial Services Industry. Anyone is eligible to apply for a bursary provided that you are able to show that:

  • you have not received any other bursary for the same period for which you are applying for sponsorship from Absa
  • You are pursuing a course of study in a discipline that will benefit the Financial Services Industry
  • you are academically proficient
  • you have registered at a recognised Tertiary Education Institution in South Africa
  • you are a South African or Namibian citizen

What does Absa require from me when applying?
When applying you must at least be in your first year of study at an accredited university in South Africa.

What is considered as 'Academic proficiency'?

  • As an applicant, you must have passed all your subjects and achieved an average percentage (across all subjects) of no less than 65% in the first semester of the 2010 academic year.
  • If you were in Grade 12 in 2009, you must have obtained an average of no less than 75% in your Grade 12 final examinations
  • You  must have passed all your subjects and must have attained an average (across all subjects) of no less than 65% in the first semester of the 2010 academic year

At which institutions can I study that Absa will support?
Absa will support studies at all the universities in South Africa.

 

4.

Which qualifications are seen to favourable to the Financial Services Industry?

  • Industrial Engineering
  • Accounting (toward the SAICA CTA)
  • Risk Management
  • Actuarial Science
  • Mathematics, Statistics and Informatics
  • Any other areas of study which may be determined by business needs each year 

 

5.

Does Absa transfer the money into my account or deal directly with the institution?
Absa will deal directly with the institution but will sign a contract with you. Stipulating their and your responsibilities.

 

6.

What does the bursary include?
The bursary includes full tuition fees and will be stratified according to the annual bursary award and the individual’s needs.

 

7.

Will the bursary cover my full studies and how do I apply for the next year?
You will be assessed every year and if your performance is satisfactory, Absa will continue to sponsor you.

 

8.

Will the bursary cover post graduate studies if I wish to continue studying after completing my undergraduate qualification?
An agreement would need to be reached between yourself and Absa should you wish to continue with post graduate studies. This opportunity will be afforded at the sole discretion of Absa.

 

9.

What happens if I fail?
If your performance is not satisfactory as contractually agreed, Absa  may freeze the bursary or terminate the agreement and the bursar may be liable to repay all funds received, including the applicable interest.
