3D Secure



Q

How does 3D Secure work?

 

  • Absa will ensure that all credit cardholders are eligible for participating in 3D Secure.
  • When you as cardholder, purchase for the first time online at a participating merchant, you will be required to activate your card by supplying the information requested on the screen. Click “continue” to proceed with the activation process.
  • You will be requested to create a password (4 to 8 alpha-numeric characters) for identification and authentication purposes for future online/internet purchasing only. Click “submit” to conclude the activation process.
  • You will subsequently be presented with an authentication screen, detailing your purchase particulars (site name, purchase amount and date) and you will be requested to authenticate yourself with your created personal password. Please note: your personal message on the authentication screen will initially be your personal identification number. It proves that the authentication/authorisation screen is presented by Absa. Click on “submit” to proceed with the purchase. Without your password, the purchase can not be concluded.
  • After initial activation of a specific credit card, you will only be required to enter your password for future online/Internet purchases with the same card.

What is the 'Activation during Shopping Process'?

 

As an Absa credit cardholder, you have the opportunity to activate your card during shopping at a participating merchant.

 

When completing the activation screen, you will be requested to provide the following information:

  • Name on card. Please enter your name exactly as it appears on your card.
  • Expiry date (MM/YY)
  • Signature Panel Code. The last 3 digits on the back of your credit card.
  • Id number. As provided when originally applying for your credit card.
  • E-mail address.
  • Personal Message. The personal message will “default” as your identification number, during the activation process. You may have your personal message changed, by contacting the Absa 3D Secure Call Centre, who will assist you. Do not choose a password that is identical to your personal message. Your password must never be revealed, while the personal message is openly displayed on the screen.
  • Password. You will be able to create your own password, between 4 to 8 characters, without spaces. Please use a combination of letters and numbers. Never reveal your password to anyone.
  • Re-enter Password. Re-enter the exact password as created above.
  • Submit. This concludes activation and creates password process.

Q

What is Username?

 

Your username is a system generated name assigned to you by Absa during the activation process. It is based on your first and last name

Why do I have to supply personal information during activation?

 

The personal information supplied, is used as an additional security measure and is verified against the data stored in the Absa credit card database.

Why am I required to supply an e-mail address during activation?

 

Your e-mail will only be used for notification purposes from Absa. This will be done in accordance with the privacy policy and the terms of use

What is Personal Message?

 

The Personal Message is "defaulted" to your identification number. You may request the Absa 3D Secure Call Centre to change this to a more appropriate message. It may be between 6 and 30 alpha-numeric characters. The text should be personal and recognisable. Each time you shop online and is presented with the authentication screen, you should look for your personal message.

 

This is proving that the screen presented is a genuine Absa screen. Please do not select a personal message that is identical to your password. Your password must never be revealed, while the personal message is openly displayed on the screen.

What is Card Security Code?

 

The Card Security Code is the last three digits on the signature panel, on the back of your credit card. It is a second level of security to assure that you are in possession of the card you are activating

How do I activate additional credit cards for 3D Secure?

 

After you have activated a specific card for 3D Secure, the activation screen will not be presented for further purchases with the same card.
If you purchase online at a participating merchant with a card that has not yet been activated (the card number is forwarded via the participating merchant to the authentication system), the system will recognise that the card has not yet been activated and will present the activation screens.

Can I use the same personal message and password for all my Absa credit cards?

 

Yes you may. During the activation process you will be required to create a password (4 to 8 alpha-numeric characters). You may not use passwords that you have used in the past. This is for additional security.

How do I change my password?

 

The Absa 3D Secure Call Centre (012 317 3344) will assist you to change your password. You will be requested to start and conclude the activation and create password process again. This is necessary for security reasons and validation of your personal details by Absa prior to you changing your password

What is a participating merchant?

 

Merchants participating in the 3D Secure environment will in all instances endeavour to authenticate cardholders shopping on their site. Merchants are participating if they have deployed a software module, called a Merchant Plug-in (MPI) on their online site.

 

This software module routes the card payment detail to Absa's (Issuing bank) Access Control Server for verification and authentication prior to authorisation of the transaction by Absa. Only participating merchant sites will present the cardholder with an activation and/or authentication screen/s during online shopping. Only Absa cardholders that have activated their cards will be authenticated.

Can I purchase at merchants that do not participate in 3D Secure?

 

Yes. You will however not be able to utilise 3D Secure. You will be able to complete the shopping process by following the regular "checkout" route.

Q

The Personal Message on the authentication screen is not mine or does not appear. What should I do?

 

Always look for your personal message before entering your password. If a personal message, other than yours, appears on the screen or if no personal message appears on the screen, please do not enter your password; contact Absa 3D Secure Call Centre at 012 317 3344, immediately
